The Postgraduate Programme in Bioinformatics – Computational Biology addresses the need for high-level specialised education that provides young scientists with the essential foundational skills to enter the dynamically evolving field of Bioinformatics. Given the rapid and ongoing expansion, both at the academic-research and applied levels, of the broader biotechnology-related industrial sector (including biotechnology, pharmacogenomics, molecular medicine, etc.), as well as in areas related to nature conservation, the development of scientific personnel with a solid background and training in Bioinformatics lays the foundation for the advancement of this field (as well as Biology more broadly) in Greece.
Furthermore, it contributes to the creation of a critical mass of scientists with the necessary qualifications for conducting further research and educating new scientists in Bioinformatics technologies, which are rapidly and fundamentally transforming the way biological research is conducted today.
The MSc Programme is organised and coordinated by the Department of Biology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In addition, the Programme collaborates with a wide network of distinguished universities and research centres in Greece, including the Agricultural University of Athens, the University of Thessaly, the National Technical University of Athens, Harokopio University, the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA), the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, the Biomedical Research Institute of the Academy of Athens (BRI/“Fleming” Institute), and the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”.
Courses within the Programme are taught by faculty members and researchers from the above institutions. In addition, the Programme includes lectures by invited speakers from major academic and/or research institutions in Greece and abroad.
